The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is currently seeking nominations for its new Anniversary Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine, a fellowship opportunity to support the advancement of emerging leaders in osteopathic medical education. Each Fellowship will be awarded for a two-year period, during which time the Fellow is expected to continue working in their current academic position. Each Fellow is assigned to an IOM member who will serve as a senior mentor for the duration of the Fellowship.

Nominated candidates should be in the early stages of their osteopathic medical careers. For more information, see AACOM's IOM Anniversary Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine webpage< http://www.aacom.org/news/latest/Pages/IOMFellowship.aspx
>. (Updates to this program are happening in real time-be sure to check the webpage frequently.)

AACOM, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) are working together to fund and sustain this program, and will participate in the final nomination process after the application cycle closes.

Overview

The IOM Anniversary Fellowship in Osteopathic Medicine has been created this year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the IOM's establishment and is now accepting nominations. (See Nomination Process< http://www.aacom.org/news/latest/Pages/IOMFellowship.aspx#nominations
> below.)

This newest addition to the IOM Anniversary Fellows Program joins others in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology (Norman F. Gant Fellow), internal medicine (in honor of John Benson), family medicine (James C. Puffer Fellow), pharmacy (Pharmacy Fellow), and biomedical science, population health and health policy (Gilbert S. Omenn Fellow).

The purpose of the IOM Anniversary Fellows Program is to enable talented, early career health policy or health science scholars to participate actively in the work of the IOM and to further their careers as future leaders in the field. The Fellowships are awarded for a two-year period during which time the Fellows are expected to continue working at their main academic post. The Fellows will be assigned to a board of the IOM, attend its meetings, and actively participate in the work of an appropriate expert study committee or roundtable, including contributing to its report or other products.

The Fellows are invited to the IOM Annual Meeting and also take part in an intense one-week orientation to health policy in Washington, DC. This introduces the Fellows to a variety of perspectives, including legislators, government officials, industry, patient interest groups, scientists, and health professionals.

Each Fellow is assigned to an IOM member who will serve as a senior mentor for the duration of the Fellowship. In addition, each Fellow is provided with a flexible research stipend of $25,000.

Nomination Process

AACOM is now actively seeking candidate nominations for those individuals who qualify for this program in order to participate in an evaluation process of those nominees by the three funding organizations: AACOM, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF). These organizations are working to fund and sustain this program and will participate in the final nomination process.

Please note that nominees must have a DO degree and be the early stages of their osteopathic academic careers. Eligibility for the program is limited to those between two and seven years out of their postgraduate training.

Candidates seeking to participate in this evaluation process must submit their completed application packet to their official nominator (see below). The nominator will then submit this complete application directly to AACOM no later than June 23, 2014 via email to IOMfellow at aacom.org
<mailto: IOMfellow at aacom.org
>. A complete application must include:
· Nomination letter from a member of the Institute of Medicine, the Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association, the Board of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, or the Board of Directors of the American Osteopathic Foundation
§ Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
§ Supporting letter from Department Chair
·      An up-to-date curriculum vita
·      A brief, one-page biography

Once this completed application packet is received, AACOM, AOA, and AOF will verify, compile, and forward application materials to IOM for final consideration. The following details are important to consider as you begin thinking about possible nominees and to further familiarize yourself with the IOM guidelines:
        i.      The Fellowship is awarded for a two-year period, during which time the Fellow is expected to continue working at his/her main academic post;
       ii.      Each Fellow is assigned to an IOM member, who will serve as a senior mentor for the duration of the Fellowship;
      iii.      Fellowships require a commitment of 10-20% time for the successful candidate;
      iv. Questions about the nomination and selection process should be directed to Marie Michnich, Director of Health Policy Educational Program and Fellowships, at 202-334-1506, or via email at mmichnich at nas.edu
<mailto: mmichnich at nas.edu
>.
