I have a friend who teaches at the School for the Blind. The use of iPads and mobile technologies among this community is growing. It's counter-intuitive that these students would be using devices which are so visually oriented. I think an interesting ethnographical or narrative study could be made of how students in schools such as this incorporate these mainstream devices. The resistance among the school administrators and instructors is high. -----Original Message----- From: itech-bounces at listserv.ohio.edu [mailto: itech-bounces at listserv.ohio.edu ] On Behalf Of itech-request at listserv.ohio.edu Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2012 6:00 AM To: itech at listserv.ohio.edu Subject: Itech Digest, Vol 47, Issue 5 Send Itech mailing list submissions to itech at listserv.ohio.edu To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://listserv.ohio.edu/mailman/listinfo/itech or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to itech-request at listserv.ohio.edu You can reach the person managing the list at itech-owner at listserv.ohio.edu When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Itech digest..." I am very interested in this topic as well and have written in a book chapter about digital citizenship so maybe if you are interested, this would be a good topic for a dissertation. See her note below. Thanks Laura for the idea! Dr. Franklin ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Hibbard, Laura < lr108693 at ohio.edu > Date: Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 7:02 PM Subject: Dissertation/Thesis Topic Idea To: "Franklin, Teresa" < franklit at ohio.edu > Dr. Franklin, Being the parent of two pre-teens (yikes!) and a teacher as well, I think a nice dissertation/thesis topic would be internet safety and if children are being taught about the dangers of sharing personal information over the internet. Kids are so trustworthy and this makes a scary scenario online. This topic is pretty prevalent in our household and pretty much ignored in the official school curriculum. Schools and parents hammer in "stranger danger," but are internet friends strangers? Kids seem not to think so. The concept of teaching credible sources is covered in the schools (at least in 5th grade) but teaching children internet safety is typically left to parents. There are many social-networking types of sites for children and kids are drawn to these. My own daughters SWEAR they're conversing with kids and we try endlessly to teach them that they simply do not know who they are talking/typing with. Yesterday, our 11 year old admitted to giving our phone number out! Anyway, I'm sure you have advisees who aren't sure of their research paths, but perhaps this will be a topic someone is interested in. I'd be interested in the results! This is a difficult generation to raise! Maybe it will be a future article for me if no one else jumps on it.
