Howdy EEBers!

This email is a repeat (with a few edits) of one I sent out a couple days ago. However, all the incoming EEB graduate students were added to the listserv today (thank you, Viorel!), so I am resending it.  So far, only the last speaking slot (11/30) has been taken, so the seminar remains wide open!

ECOLUNCH!

I hope everyone had a splendid summer full of research and rejuvenation!  With the fall semester impending, it’s time to organize Ecolunch. All EEB graduate students in BIOS should take this seminar. Every MS student has to give at least one EcoLunch presentation, and every PhD student has to give three of them. It is better to space them out over time, of course. The fall semester is typically far less full than the spring semester, so giving your seminar in the fall if you can is a good strategy.

As a special note: I encourage talks on works in progress. I understand the temptation to focus on completed projects, but that is what a thesis defense is for. Talks on ideas or new research are useful because they provide an opportunity for feedback while there is still time for feedback to be helpful. It also is useful for developing and clarifying ideas, and figures can be recycled for theses, papers, and grant proposals. We’re all friends, we’re here to help, and it’s a small group, so don’t be shy to talk about upcoming or ongoing work.

For incoming EEB students (and even more senior graduate students), I also encourage talks on undergraduate research and masters projects. It is a great chance to learn about your background, and it exposes us all to increased research diversity.

My plan is to continue Ecolunch as a online seminar, because right now the covid risk in Athens county is rated as “high”, mandating masks in all indoor spaces. Personally, I prefer to have Ecolunch in a room, not online, but for now I think this is the best option. In the future, hopefully near future, I plan to move Ecolunch back to Irvine 159.

PPS: This is *not* limited to BIOS, and I’d love to host seminars from students in Plant Biology, Geology, Philosophy, History, Mathematics, and any other department with ties to OCEES. Don’t be shy!

PPPS: Faculty and others are also welcome to give seminars. Indeed, I strongly encourage talks from everyone.
