Rebecca Thessin is an Assistant Professor of Educational Administration at The George Washington University. Dr. Thessin is a former Chief School Improvement Officer, Assistant Superintendent, and Director of School Improvement. Dr. Thessin is the Chairperson of the Leadership for School Improvement Special Interest Group (LSI SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). AERA has been in existence since 1916.


In the most recent edition of LSI SIG newsletter, Dr. Thessin is quoted as stating "In the class I am teaching this semester at The George Washington University, titled 'Advanced Instructional Leadership for School Improvement,' my students have asked, on numerous occasions, "Why, when we know what leads to instructional improvement, don't we do it?" We all conclude that the "how" and the "what" of what instructional improvement looks like in practice, on a day-to-day basis, are the most challenging aspects of improvement for leaders to grasp."



Instructional improvement, as mentioned by Dr. Thessin appears to be a "first cousin" to the Ohio Improvement Process, which is clearly a "first cousin" to the cycle of inquiry process.  As you address the cycle of inquiry assignment, please remember that identifying the process is the key factor and as Dr. Thessin mentioned the identification of the "how and what" are "the most challenging aspects of improvement for leaders to grasp."

  1.  Greetings; I thoroughly enjoyed being with you yesterday. The respect and civility that you regularly exhibit for each other and for me is refreshing. A challenging week becomes a good week after having spent a Saturday with you.


  1.  While I very well may be wrong, I sense that several of you are struggling with the part of the journey into administration that has no "right" or "wrong" answers. The reaction seems normal, as most of us were raised to view life as being about doing "right" and "wrong." For that matter, doing "right" and "wrong" is a significant part of the answer to administrative challenges. For example, Ohio has an Ethics Commission, the regulations and rules of which you must address. See < https://www.ethics.ohio.gov/

  1.  However, the bottom line to administration appears to be embedded in the identification and implementation of a path of action that is in the best interest of the greatest number of the stakeholders, particularly the students.


  1.  Cycle of Inquiry/Logic Model Assignment:

  1.  I further sense that you feel challenged by the Cycle of Inquiry/Logic Model assignment. That seems understandable. For that matter, please do your best with the assignment, ponder my reactions to your submissions, and be prepared to discuss the process during the spring semester.



  1.  Your district and school may be involved in a process that appears to be closely akin to the Cycle of Inquiry/Logic Model. It is labeled as being the Ohio Improvement Process.
