AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Charleston WV 501 AM EST Wed Jan 16 2019 .LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 445 AM Wednesday... A strong low pressure system will move into the region on Saturday. Precipitation may start off as a wintry mix early Saturday morning, before transitioning over to rain as the day progresses. High amounts of moisture advected into the region, pw values of around an inch, above the 90th percentile for this time of year, and strong dynamics will result in heavy rainfall. Still looking like heaviest rainfall qpf will be in southeast Ohio and areas near the Ohio River, and WPC has a general 1.5 to 2 inches qpf for these areas, with lesser amounts to the south and east. Regardless, with the wet soil conditions, and precipitation from the Thursday/Friday system, flooding cannot be ruled out anywhere. Will highlight this potential in the HWO. System will start to move to the east of the region by Saturday night, with much colder air rushing in behind the system, along with gusty winds. Will see a change over to snow, possibly briefly heavy for a few hours late Saturday night/early Sunday, before quickly tapering off during the day Sunday. Preliminary snowfall accumulations in the forecast, which at this point only go to Sunday morning, have 1 to 4 inches across southeast Ohio. As stated, much colder air, on the order of -21Z at 850mb will move into the area as the day progresses Sunday. By Monday morning, will see low temperatures in the single digits across the lowlands, and below zero across the higher terrain. May even see some spots in southeast Ohio close to 0 or slightly below. This, combined with the gusty winds behind the departing system, looks to necessitate a wind chill advisory across the higher terrain, if not parts of the lowlands too. ___________________ Official NWS Athens OH 7-Day Forecast (updates 4-5 times daily): http://climate.athens.oh.us/Athens-7Day/ ===================================================================== The "StormFlood" Listserv is a regional preparedness and planning partnership including Ohio University Risk Management and Safety. http://www.ohio.edu/riskandsafety/ Affiliated web services: Southeast Ohio Flood Potential Monitoring page: http://seorf.ohio.edu/xx073/floodprep.html Athens Co.
