Middle school presents new challenges and opportunities for students, both academically, emotionally and physically, as students begin developing into young adolescents. The Middle Childhood Education (MCE) program at Ohio University Chillicothe will prepare you to help young adolescents in grades four through nine develop conceptual understanding and fluency in various content specializations, as well as the skills and competencies necessary for active and informed citizenship. The Middle Childhood Education program emphasizes a commitment to equity, justice, and diversity.
The Bachelor of Science in Education in Middle Childhoodprogram includes six majors with academic specializations in any two of the following content specializations: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. A generalist endorsement for each of the four subject specializations is available for candidates who wish to add a third or fourth teaching field to the middle childhood license to teach grades four through six. Upon completing the program and achieving passing scores on the Ohio Assessment for Educators exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment, you will be eligible for a four-year provisional teaching license for grades four through nine in those areas.
