Workplace Health and Safety Certificate

The Workplace Health and Safety Certificate (WHSC) is a 15-credit hour program designed to provide students with essential knowledge and skills in workplace safety, complementing majors such as business, human resources, engineering, chemistry, and healthcare. By completing this certificate, students gain a marketable academic sub-specialty in their primary area of study, making them more attractive to prospective employers.

Upon completion of the certificate, students will be able to describe workplace safety regulations, explain the role of safety professionals, and demonstrate an understanding of safety practices critical to various industries. This skill set is especially valuable in smaller organizations that may require safety expertise but lack the resources to hire full-time safety professionals.

Curriculum

The Workplace Health and Safety Certificate consists of 15 credit hours, including core courses that provide foundational knowledge in occupational safety, and elective courses that allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests.

Core courses focus on key areas such as occupational safety, health regulations, and the fundamentals of occupational hygiene and safety professions. Additionally, students will select electives from two categories: management/leadership/communication and hazard identification/control. These electives enable students to gain further expertise in areas like risk communication, environmental law, work design, and public health emergency response.
