Michele Fiala is the Professor of Oboe at Ohio University. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States, Italy, England, Germany, France, Spain, Canada and Japan. Her orchestral work has included performances with the Cincinnati Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, West Virginia Symphony and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.

Of her solo CDs, The Light Wraps You and Overheard on MSR Classics, Fanfare Magazine said, “The playing is light, fluent, and wonderfully flexible,” BBC Music Magazine noted her “impressive command” and American Record Guide said, “She has depth, charm, and humor.” Her recent CD with the Athenia Trio, Brush Strokes (Navona Records) was called “unpredictable and glowing.” Fiala has commissioned many new works for these recordings, by composers including Phillip Bimstein (UT), Susan Kander (NYC), Bev Lewis (Canada), Alyssa Morris (KS), Robbie McCarthy (CA), and Theresa Martin (WI).

Dr. Fiala’s second book, Great Oboists on Music and Musicianship (coauthored with Martin Schuring) was recently released by Oxford University Press. Her first book, A Performer’s Guide to Nineteenth Century Italian Music for Oboe and English Horn , is published by Trevco Music Publishing. She served as Secretary of the International Double Reed from 2014 until 2018 and as Chair of the Young Artist Competition from 2010 through 2014.
