Anthony G. Chila, D.O.
As a leading authority on osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), Anthony G. Chila, D.O., made a profound impact on the profession through innovative research and scholarship over the course of his 50+ year career. His patients in the College of Medicine’s OMM clinic continually sang his praises. But he was best known at Ohio University as a passionate and beloved OMM educator, who made an indelible mark on the lives and careers of countless Heritage College graduates, as well as medical students and physicians across the globe.
Dr. Chila earned his Doctor of Osteopathy from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1965. After 11 years in general practice, he began his academic career at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He went on to serve the Heritage College from 1978 until his retirement in 2011. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at the Heritage College, he served as chief of clinical research and chair of the Department of Family Medicine.
Dr. Chila was a fellow of the American Academy of Osteopathy and the Osteopathic Cranial Academy, among many other professional affiliations. His accolades included an Educator of the Year Award (American Osteopathic Foundation), the Gutensohn-Denslow Award (American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Research) and the Andrew Taylor Still Medallion of Honor (American Academy of Osteopathy). Today, the Heritage College is pleased to add to that list, as we honor Dr. Chila posthumously with our 2022 Phillips Medal of Public Service.
Dr. Chila’s masterful teaching touched the hearts and transformed the care of countless osteopathic medical students. His enduring legacy as an incredible practitioner and a world-class educator is a source of pride and distinction for the entire Heritage College community.
