OHIO’s Alumni College heads to Florida this February

Join fellow alumni and guests in Sarasota, Florida, on Feb. 24 for a series of engaging and intellectually stimulating lectures from notable OHIO faculty, as well was a lunchtime speech from University President Duane Nellis.

“One of OHIO’s greatest assets is the strength of its faculty, and Alumni College provides our alumni an opportunity to learn more about what faculty are doing and researching,” OHIO Alumni Association Assistant Director of Campus Relations Casey Arnold said. “This is a unique educational opportunity for our alumni. We are very excited about the slate of classes being offered.”

The all-day event begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Ritz-Carlton, 1111 Ritz-Carlton Drive, Sarasota, Florida. Registration and a program schedule can be found online. The cost is $30 per person or $50 per couple.

The day begins with breakfast and ends with a reception, where you can mingle with fellow alumni.

Academic sessions are as follows:

“Environment, Peacebuilding and Security: Exploring the Links,” by Geoff DabelkoDabelko is the director of environmental studies at OHIO and associate dean at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Dabelko’s presentation will focus on the connection between national security and environmental issues, and how the solutions to such problems are interconnected.

“To Buy or Not to Buy: That Is the Question,” by Colin GablerDid you ever fall prey to going-out-of-stock sales? Gabler, assistant professor of marketing in the OHIO College of Business, investigates the strategies businesses use to sell products. In this lecture, you will engage in experiments to understand the concepts of scarcity, pricing, discounts, risk and regret. Learn how retail businesses utilize the concepts in their marketing strategies.

“You Are Getting Sleepy: The Effects of Sleep on the Brain and Cognition,” by Julie SuhrSuhr, a professor in the Department of Psychology at OHIO and director of clinical training for the clinical psychology doctoral program, presents her research on the relationship between sleep and cognitive changes in aging. Learn about how good sleep is central to the brain and daily function.

“Encore Careers: Finding Meaning in Our Work after Retirement,” by Tom DavisThousands of baby boomers are retiring every day. But that doesn’t mean they are retiring from working. Davis, OHIO’s interim vice president for University Advancement, will talk about the transition from work to retirement, and how many retirees are embarking on encore careers that combine meaning, a continued income and social impact during this new phase of life.
