Tyrone Carr, who has advanced Ohio University’s diversity and inclusion efforts throughout his past 28 years of service, has been named interim director of the University’s LGBT Center.
“Ohio University is an accepting and supportive space where all students are welcome. Our LGBT Center, which just celebrated its twentieth year, provides advocacy and support for students in our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, which is pivotal to the University’s efforts to emerge as a national leader in its diversity and inclusion efforts,” said Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Gigi Secuban.
Carr, who has served OHIO in many different capacities since 1991, has most recently acted in a dual role as executive director of the Interlink Alliance, reporting directly to the President, as well in the role of Special Assistant for the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. He began his career in higher education as an administrator at Cabrini College, in Radnor, PA, and has experience with roles in student affairs, enrollment management, human resources and as a student advocate. Carr has been recognized throughout his career for his ability to build strong partnerships with constituents and stakeholders.
“In selecting an interim director, it was essential that a very deliberative decision be made to appoint someone who can provide a strong support system for students in our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities,” said Dr. Secuban. “Having worked with Ty closely in his role as Special Assistant, I am confident in his leadership talents and his commitment to this very important community. I want to thank him for serving in this critical role as we advance our national search for the Center’s permanent director.”
Carr will serve as the interim LGBT Center director to provide continuity of services to our students, faculty and staff who rely on the Center for support until a new director is selected following the national search.
The Division of Student Affairs will also provide support to the Center through wraparound services, which includes support from Counseling and Psychological Services in both individual and group counseling sessions for members of the LGBT community; student staffing resources; safe zone training services across campus; and assistance with referrals for non-health related emergencies, such as academic emergencies. Additionally, several OHIO faculty have offered to engage with the LGBT community to provide ancillary services where needed.
“I am very excited by this opportunity to serve OHIO’s LGBT community in an interim capacity,” said Carr of his recent appointment. “I have dedicated my life’s work to promoting a positive culture that celebrates difference, challenges prejudice and ensures fairness. In this new capacity, and as a longtime ally of the LGBT community, I will continue to advance programming that ensures every member of our community is treated with equality and respect.”
