OHIO joins highest level of research institutions in the nation

The following message was shared with the Ohio University community on Jan. 31, 2022.

Dear University Community,

This morning we received exceptional news from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education that Ohio University has achieved Research 1 status, joining the nation’s top research institutions as a doctoral university with very high research activity.

R1 status is the highest designation for research universities under the Carnegie Classification, which categorizes over 3900 institutions of higher education based on their programmatic attributes. Institutions holding the Carnegie R1 designation constitute the top tier of research universities as measured by expenditures supporting research and development, conferral of research doctoral degrees, and employment of Ph.D.-level personnel engaged in research.

This announcement is an important milestone in the 218-year history of our great University, making OHIO one of just 141 total institutions of higher education in the nation with an R1 classification.

As a research University, OHIO is committed to advancing the frontiers of knowledge through programs that are closely linked to the opportunities we provide our students. Our talented faculty, students, and staff have compiled a record of success in focused areas of research, scholarship, and creative activity that stretches back decades. We are gratified that these ongoing efforts are now recognized through the Carnegie R1 designation.

The Carnegie designation enhances OHIO’s visibility and creates new opportunities to increase awareness of our stature and success as a public research institution. Moving forward, Ohio University will continue to elevate the quality and impact of our scholarly and research endeavors.

A University-wide celebration is being planned for a later date. Thank you for your continued efforts and commitment to excellence.
