Tips to help ensure a warm and comfortable campus living space

The following message was shared with OHIO's residential students on January 16:

As the cold weather settles in, OHIO's Housing and Residence Life team wants to ensure that you stay warm and comfortable in your living space. Please take a moment to review the following steps to troubleshoot any issues with the temperature in your room:

  1. Ensure Proper Ventilation: Make sure that nothing is blocking the front of the heater, such as beds or blankets, as this can impede the heat flow to the room. Keep items and furniture at least 12 inches away from the vent.
  2. Check the Damper: If applicable, check if the damper on the heating element is closed. A closed damper can prevent air from reaching the heater and circulating properly. Please reference the sign on the back of your door for more information on if you have a damper within your assigned room.
  3. Turn Off Window A/C Units:If you have window A/C units, ensure they are turned off. Running A/C units alongside heaters can create an imbalance and affect the efficiency of the heating system.
  4. Double-Check the Above Steps: Confirm that you have addressed the above points. If any of these issues persist or if they are not relevant to your situation, it's time to seek further assistance from staff.

If the problem persists after checking the above steps, reach out to your Resident Advisor for further assistance. They are here to help and can provide guidance on the next steps such as submitting a work order with Facilities. This will allow our Facilities team to promptly address and troubleshoot the concern.

Your comfort and well-being are our top priorities. By following these steps, we hope to ensure that your room is warm and cozy throughout the colder months ahead.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Housing and Residence Life via text, phone (740.593.4090) or email ( housing@ohio.edu ).
