Sip, paint and celebrate the season

Ohio University Southern is providing an opportunity to create, connect and grow this holiday season through Community Education Workshops .

These workshops welcome people from all backgrounds, focusing on skill-building and personal enrichment while showcasing the talents of area professionals.

"Our Community Education program is designed to bring people together to learn and explore their creative potential," said Teresa Smith, community programming coordinator. "These workshops not only offer personal enrichment but also serve as a platform for local professionals to share their knowledge and talents."

Paint and Sip workshop

An upcoming highlight is the Paint and Sip workshop on Nov. 19, led by southern Ohio artist and educator Charlie Haskins . Known for his lively, whimsical illustrations that blend caricature with folk art, Haskins will guide participants in creating their own paintings while enjoying wine and charcuterie.

A well-established figure in the local art scene, Haskins brings extensive experience. He has created several murals in the tri-state area, including works along Portsmouth’s flood wall and at the Boyd County Public Library in Ashland, Kentucky. His work has been exhibited across numerous galleries and festivals, including the Nelsonville Music Festival, the Southern Ohio Museum and exhibits in Michigan and Indiana.

In addition to his visual artwork, Haskins is a published illustrator and author, with works like "Moon Songs," which is a book and CD collaboration, and "Tabby Road," a self-published coloring book featuring pages filled with imaginative storytelling.

"Art is a way to see the world through a new lens," said Haskins. "I hope participants leave not just with a painting but with a renewed sense of curiosity and joy." His background as a K-12 art instructor and adjunct professor adds a unique educational perspective to his creative guidance in this workshop, open to those 21 and older, with a $50 fee.

Wreath Making and Healthy Baking for the Holidays

In December, the Wreath Making and Healthy Baking for the Holidays series on Dec. 3, 10, and 17 invites the community to get into the festive spirit. Led by Christina Baker and Smith, this series combines two key elements of holiday cheer – crafting and delicious, health-conscious baking. The first two sessions will focus on gluten-free and sugar-free recipes for seasonal treats, while the final week centers around creating custom wreaths.

Baker began baking sugar-free treats for diabetic family members in 2023. Her love of baking has grown into a business, with her treats being available from local meal prep company Keeneys Kitchen .

"This series combines the joy of festive decor with healthy living,” said Smith. “It’s a wonderful way to bring people together during the holiday season to create something meaningful.” The fee for the series is $35.

Open to the public, Ohio University Southern’s Community Education program welcomes people of all ages (unless noted) and provides year-round opportunities.

For those seeking personal growth and a chance to connect with skilled local professionals, these workshops offer an ideal blend of creativity, community, and inspiration. Space is limited, and registration is required.
