Sam has been the Director of Sustainability since April 2023. He starting working in the Office of Sustainability in June 2014, first as a Sustainability Project Coordinator and then Associate Director of Sustainability. Prior to joining the office he was an Instructor in Ohio University's Department of History, primarily teaching non-Western history. Sam holds a B.A. in English from Lawrence University (Appleton, WI), an M.A. in International Affairs (Southeast Asian Studies) from Ohio University, and is finishing a Ph.D. in History (Southeast Asia) at OHIO. Sam grew up in Athens and returned in 1996 after living for many years in Osaka, Japan and Washington, D.C., where he worked for the Institute of International Education. Sam served as the Third Ward Representative on Athens City Council beginning in January 2018 and became Council President in January 2024. Sam and his wife have three children, and the whole family enjoys playing soccer, hiking, biking, reading, and enjoying live music.
