The success of our graduates starts with a strong internship program. Internships give students valuable real-world experiences that help in gaining the experience needed to secure full-time employment in the communication industry.
Internship Report Form
Are you an Ohio University Scripps College of Communication student headed into an internship experience? We'd love to know about it!
The Scripps College of Communication encourages ALL students in the college to complete and report internships. Completing internships and reporting them on the Internship Report Form is REQUIRED for students in the E.W. School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication.
You MUST complete the form in its entirety, complete with your supervisor name and email.
JOURNALISM students: After you have completed the Internship Report Form, your internship supervisor will receive an email from Ohio University Scripps College of Communication with an internship evaluation link and password that allows them to complete and return your internship evaluation. Your internship evaluation form is used to verify that you have completed your internships. After your internship supervisor completes your evaluation form, it will be sent to you academic advisor for approval. After your academic advisor approves your internship evaluation form, your DARS will be updated to reflect you have completed your internship requirement for your degree.

Applications open for $4,000 Don Perris internship scholarships; apply by Feb. 20
The application for the 2025 Don Perris Scholarship Internship Support Fund is NOW OPEN! Juniors and seniors may apply for the Don Perris Endowed Scholarship Internship Award.
The fund supports highly competitive, prestigious internships to be completed in summer or fall. Students earn $3,000 awards to support their internship experiences, and then, upon successful completion of their internships, a $1,000 scholarship, for a total $4,000 award.

. In order to apply, students will need a cover letter explaining what the award would mean to them, a resume, proof that they have applied to an internship OR proof they have been offered an internship, a budget for the internship completion, and a copy of their DARS.
Students do not need a secured internship to apply.Finalists will be chosen and notified in March and must secure an internship (or a combination of internships) totalling at least 35 hours a week for 10 weeks by APRIL 15, 2025.

Summer and Fall 2025 Non-Legal Externship Opportunity
The Civic Education Section has an unpaid externship opportunity for the Summer and Fall 2025 semester. Only candidates seeking academic credit will be considered for this opportunity.
The Civic Education Section offers education programming and outreach efforts for visitors to the court and the public, by conducting tours, coordinating the Off-site Court program, working with local, state, national and international visitor groups, organizing special events, and increasing the Court’s art, history, and educational resources.

Externs will assist with research, writing, and content development for educational resources, social media, and outreach programs. Other responsibilities include assisting with or leading guided tours for audiences of all ages, promoting the Court's education initiatives at outreach events across the state, and completing administrative tasks to support the office's daily operations.The ideal extern has experience in public speaking, communication, social media management, writing, and/or education programming. These interviews are for freshman, sophomore and junior students to talk with recruiters about internship opportunities and seniors for potential full-time job opportunities. Projects range from environmental restoration to economic development, program evaluations, health needs assessments, focus groups, survey research, public relations, web content development, social entrepreneurship, government development, and more. - Where would like to intern? Think about the type of internship, possible company and geographic location (city or state).
- Think about the type of internship experience you want to have. What skills do you want to build during this experience? Think about your long-term career path.
- Network on LinkedIn
and the Bobcat Network with professors, friends, family and other Bobcats.
- Ask questions about how they got to where they are now, ask for industry feedback, and ask for tips on how to break into the industry.
- Expand your network by asking if they know anyone else you need to meet and with whom to speak.
- Always follow up with people you meet.

- LinkedIn – Get established since this is a professional networking site. Update your profile with your career accomplishments, company information and education.
- Twitter – Allows you to tap into community sharing similar interest. Look for opportunities to share your ideas, opinions and interests with people you respect professionally.
- Facebook – Great place to promote your professional brand. Post informational articles, follow trends, connect with your friends. Clean-up Facebook (remove any suspect photos) or make them private. Do not post anything you would not place on the front of the local newspaper.

- Student Development Newsletter from the dean’s office - This is sent each week directly to your OHIO email in-box. If you aren't seeing it, search your Spam, Clutter or Junk folders for emails from "Scripps College of Communication via Handshake."
- Specific company websites – If you’re interested in a particular geographic area, you may need to look at the possibilities and then make inquiries. For example, if you want to intern at a newspaper, first make a list of the newspapers in the area and then do some research on their websites to see if they list internships. If not, you might contact them and let them know you are interested.
