Success Advisors provide academic advising and early career coaching to support you in achieving your academic, personal, and professional goals. Through co-creation of graduation plans, advisors help ensure on-time and on-plan graduation, while integrating academic requirements, career development, and experiential learning opportunities. Advisors empower students to monitor their academic progress and access timely resources for success. They understand the vast network of support available at Ohio University and connect their advisees with resources to support their success at OHIO and beyond.

Advising Expectations
You can expect your advisor to:
- Establish and adhere to reasonable appointment availability
- Respond to questions or concerns in a timely manner
- Understand the mechanics and deadlines of enrolling students, such as scheduling, adding and dropping classes, waitlisting, and permission requesting
- Understand how to effectively navigate a DARS report and how to view what-if DARS reports for exploring other majors, minors, or certificates
- Be familiar with the variety of degree and program offerings, departmental and college requirements, and university-wide BRICKS requirements (as outlined in the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog)
- Co-create and update a Graduation Plan based on students’ goals, integrating academic requirements, career development, and experiential learning opportunities
- Help students continually reevaluate their Graduation Plan in light of changing goals, academic performance, course offerings, and course sequencing
- Monitor academic progress and provide information or resources as needed to stay on-plan or to get back on-plan
- Share information about opportunities in their major and intended career goals (such as internships, practicums, volunteer, study away, service learning, and more)
- Understand university grading policies, repeat, retake, probation, academic dismissal, and academic reinstatement
- Be sensitive to the needs of students from a diverse range of backgrounds
- Maintain familiarity with support resources and refer students as appropriate to meet specific needs or goals
An advisor expects a student to:
- Consult with the advisor at least once each term
- Schedule timely appointments for advising prior to registration date
- Read emails or other communications and respond in a timely manner
- Attend appointments prepared and on time; notify advisor in advance of unable to attend appointment
- Monitor academic progress, check grades, and utilize resources as needed
- Understand how to read and use a DARS report and review the Graduation Plan
- Be aware of major, college, and university-wide BRICKS requirements
- Prepare for the advising appointment by having reviewed the DARS, Graduation Plan, and course offerings. Bring written questions as appropriate.
- Reflect on and discuss academic and career-related goals and interests
- Follow through with appropriate action after each advising session and consult with the advisor if critical decisions cannot be accomplished
- Seek additional support from appropriate resources as recommended by the advisor
- Seek assistance in decision making rather than expect the advisor to make decisions
