  • Here are the 2024 primary Ohio Supreme Court candidates

    Ohio voters will determine which Republicans and Democrats will be on the 2024 November general election ballot on the March 19 primary. A race Ohioans may not be as familiar with is the state Supreme Court race of which there will be three races this year. The Ohio Supreme Court races have implications for the future rights of Ohioans, according to the Ohio Capital Journal. The Columbus Dispatch reported that the Ohio Supreme Court “will likely decide how the new abortion rights constitutional amendment should be interpreted.” 

  • GivePulse 101: Logging in & finding opportunities

    This is the third article in a series focused on navigating GivePulse, OHIO's community engaged-experiential learning platform.

    This article is focused on getting started as a user to find and register for opportunities in the GivePulse network. GivePulse is a national, public platform, and anyone can search givepulse.com for ways to get involved in their community, regardless of affiliation with Ohio University.

  • Participate in Focus Groups with the Engage Committee

    In addition to the survey released last week, the committee is also coordinating focus groups for students, faculty/staff, and community members to meet and provide valuable input on ways in which we serve our state and engage with our partners and supporters and determine ways to broaden and deepen partnerships that help us impact students and communities.

  • Single-use plastic ban to go into effect Jan. 1 with transitional help from Athens Rethink Plastics

    On May 1, 2023, Athens City Council voted to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags in the city. Originally, the ordinance was set to go into effect Aug. 1, but was moved to Jan. 1 to give local businesses more time to adjust to the change. Athens Rethink Plastics has been actively working to change the way people in the community treat the environment, but also, themselves. The group was created by a group of individuals concerned about the impacts of plastic consumption and production and its impact on the environment and people’s health. 

  • Good Works to Host ‘Day In The Life’ This Saturday

    On Saturday, December 2nd at 10:00 a.m., people can join Good Works and participate in one of two walking paths with the same goal in mind: understanding and learning about the causes and experiences of homelessness. Both of The Day In The Life paths will begin at the picnic shelter at 450 West State Street and then go their separate ways.

  • The Center for Community Engagement Announces Name Change

    The Center for Campus and Community Engagement has officially changed its name to the Center for Community Engagement (CCE). While this development may appear small, the achievements the center has made in the last few years in connecting OHIO campuses and communities are not so minor.

  • OHIO Community Partner Awards Announced

    At the second annual Community Engagement Symposium on Sept. 29, Ohio University announced the first ever Outstanding Community Partner Awards. These community partners were recognized for their meritorious collaboration with an Ohio University campus.

    Across Athens and all five regional campuses, candidates were nominated by either an Ohio University student, faculty, or staff member for their contributions to partnerships supporting community-engaged research, curricular or co-curricular engagement, special projects or other initiatives that promote mutual benefits for the Ohio University and the community.

  • A look into the changes of voting rights of underrepresented communities throughout history

    A look back at who was able to vote and when in U.S. history is a necessary reflection in order to understand today’s issues concerning voter disenfranchisement and suppression seen nationwide.
