Patton College to host sixth Black Lives Matter panel discussion

The Patton College of Education is featuring the sixth panel discussion in its Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn Series. “The (Mis)Representation of People of Color in Research” will be held on Monday, Nov. 9, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

This Microsoft Teams live session features a panel that will discuss on how People of Color are represented, or misrepresented, in research. Panel members will share experiences where they have been asked to alter parts of their identity for their research and/or how they intentionally honor the identities of People of Color through their work.

The panel features Dr. Adrienne Erby, assistant professor, counseling and higher education; Dr. Adah Ward Randolph, professor, educational studies; Dr. Emmanuel Jean Francois, associate professor, educational studies. The panel moderator/convener is Dr. Sara Helfrich, senior associate dean for research and graduate studies.

Take-aways include:

  • Discover how people negatively respond to the identities and experiences of researchers of color.
  • Learn how people have honored the identities and experiences of researchers of color.
  • Understand the responsibilities of researchers to honor the identities and experiences of People of Color within their research.
  • Explore ways researchers hold a critical lens when telling the stories of People of Color.

All previous sessions are available on The  Patton College’s YouTube channel , including the most recent session held on Oct. 26. “Black Women’s Academic and Professional Experiences” featured a panel of African American women in academia who shared their experiences, challenges, and strategies in navigating their professional lives in light of increased racial unrest in our country. The panelists also discussed how racism has influenced their academic and professional growth and provided anti-racist education resources to assist those who wish to dismantle anti-racist behaviors, practices, and policies.

The Black Lives Matter Munch & Learn series is open to Ohio University and the community and will be hosted on Microsoft Teams Live. It will be recorded for those who cannot participate live and posted on The  Patton College’s YouTube channel .
