Lucas Stemen earned his associate’s degree in applied science in law enforcement technology from Ohio University in fall 2019 and is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Lucas lives in Lancaster, Ohio and has completed most of his coursework at Ohio University Lancaster. In his new position as a visitation monitor for Fairfield County Job and Family Services he supports court-appointed visitation by transporting children and parents to safe and neutral locations and monitoring those visits.
“I love helping children,” Stemen says. “I’ve always wanted to work with kids and make sure they are being prepared for adulthood.”
Why did you choose Ohio University?I liked the atmosphere I encountered while touring Ohio University Lancaster. I chose to stay local and attend OHIO Lancaster where the atmosphere was friendly and accepting of older students like myself. I saw many students my age and older attending classes.
What OHIO professors have made an impact on you?
Lisa Taylor taught me and my fellow Bobcats the importance of using ethics and integrity in everything we do.
Dr. Jennifer Steele taught me a great deal in the area of criminal justice theory and deviant behavior.
How did Ohio University equip you with the skills you need to work in the criminal justice field?From professors like Lisa Taylor and Dr. Jennifer Steele I learned theory, skills, and confidence. I gained an understanding of multiculturalism and diversity which will serve me well when dealing with individuals in the criminal justice field. The criminal justice degree helps you understand the human mind and focus on the small details that other people might not recognize.
What was your favorite course you took at OHIO?Deviant Behavior, which focuses on why people commit crimes.
What advice do you have for students beginning their careers at OHIO?Enjoy the experience, whether you are at the Athens campus or a regional campus. Enjoy the comradery and the opportunity to learn life and career skills. Never be afraid to ask your professors for help because they are here to guide you and help you acquire the knowledge to be successful. It is very important that you take time for you. College can be very stressful with the pressure of projects, deadlines, and tests but, all of that comes second to your mental health. Take time out of your day to enjoy things you love.
