From the glitz and glam of Cher to the “who wore it best” posts, Thread Magazine and the executive board of “threadies” have been bringing fashion, glamour, and creativity to the OHIO campus since 2010. Following Thread on social media allows you to enjoy sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes posts of their latest unique fashion shoots. Wondering where the Thread team gets their inspiration for the potential pieces in the magazine issues they publish each semester?
“Deciding pieces for future issues is a collaborative effort,” said Riley Runnels, Thread’s editor-in-chief. “We give the staff a chance to throw their ideas in the ring, and then the executive board members brainstorm our ideas by looking at what’s trending in fashion, pop culture, and social justice, as well as what’s trending locally in Athens, to accommodate a national and local level with our work. We keep up through Twitter; other magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar; and simply by noticing what’s going on around us and feeding off of each other’s minds and trends”.
On top of that, the team strives to take existing fashion trends and make them accessible to the student body. If you can’t afford some of these trends or you want to start sustainable fashion practices, the magazine also gives some helpful tips and tricks. Articles include suggestions for shopping at thrift stores such as Goodwill as well as insight for students who are looking to make some extra money by selling their clothes on websites like Instagram, Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari.
The magazine also writes articles about local clothing businesses in Athens, so students are aware of the presence the stores have in town. The magazine focuses on providing information to OHIO students on current fashion trends and other fashion related topics. Students who are interested in getting involved with the magazine can do so in several ways.
“At Thread, we’re always looking for more teammates,” Runnels said. We have positions open in writing, designing the layout of the tab, photography, videography, styling (including fashion, makeup, and hair), modeling, public relations, copy editing and business ventures. Basically we say if you have an area you’re interested in, we can accommodate it and find a place for you at Thread.”
Many members have a wide variety of majors including fashion design, visual communication, photography, journalism, and more. Regardless of your year of study, Thread provides a space for meeting new people who have similar interests to yours. If creating content about fashion is something you are passionate about, Thread Magazine may be the organization for you.
If you are interested in browsing through previous and upcoming issues, you can check out the magazine’s website , where you can find more information about how to get involved. The magazine’s team meets every Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Schoonover 111. Runnels said they welcome visitors who may be curious about what goes on behind the scenes.
