Unioto High School junior Maycee Smith is getting a jump on her college career by taking courses at Ohio University Chillicothe as a College Credit Plus student.
Smith wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a nurse. She enrolled in College Credit Plus at OHIO Chillicothe so she could check off some of her college prerequisites while still completing high school. In her first year at OHIO Chillicothe, she has taken courses in political science, human biology, and writing and rhetoric and is currently taking early childhood education and statistics classes.
“I really like it,” Smith said. “I’m able to push myself harder. It makes me think more and gives me more of an opportunity to learn more besides just what's being taught at my school.”
Smith said she likes math and is enjoying her statistics class at OHIO Chillicothe, even though she was nervous about taking the class.
“I actually really like it (statistics),” she said. “It comes easily to me and I’m able to understand it.”
Smith says keeping up with all her assignments and balancing her high school and college classes, along with her work schedule, can be a challenge, but it’s a challenge she is up to. She encourages other students to push themselves.
“I work ahead a lot,” she said. “I was very intimidated, but last semester was my first semester, and I took three classes. It was kind of an adjustment to be taking classes at Unioto and Ohio University. You just have to give yourself some time to adjust and keep yourself on a schedule.”
