Course Descriptions

This is the first course of the two-semester, first-year sequence in Italian. You will learn the basic grammar and vocabulary and develop skills in reading and writing Italian.

This self-teaching course guide includes an appendix with the answers to all textbook exercises, an appendix with regular and irregular verbs, and an Italian–English vocabulary. It is recommended that all the material be carefully and thoroughly studied and all the written exercises completed and checked with the answer keys that are available. Please refer to the “Preface” and “Pronunciation Guide” sections at the beginning of the textbook for a full explanation on how to successfully use the textbook.

Reading Assignments

In order to successfully complete the exam, student must study textbook chapters 1–4 and do every exercise in the chapters. Work can be checked in the answer key at the back of the book. Extra exercises for more practice are included in the appendix of this course guide.

Nature of the Examinations

The examination covers lesson 1 through lesson 4 of the text. You will have threehours to complete the exam. The exam consists of exercises and tasks that are similar to the ones completed in the textbook and in the appendix of this course guide. You will not be examined on cultural content. You will not be allowed to use any books or supplemental materials when taking the exam. All necessary materials will be provided to you when you take the exam.
