MUS 1200—Exploring Musical Styles

Course Description
Development of listening skills for understanding elements of musical style in historical perspective and significance of music as fine art.
Methods of Course Instruction
All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.
E-Print Option
In this course, an option exists to use e-mail to submit your lesson assignments. Your assignment will be returned to you either as an e-mail attachment or as a hard copy sent through the postal mail, depending on the preferences of the instructor and/or program.

- For students who can’t use CDs: There is an option to have MP3 files emailed to you or the director/supervisor of education.
Number of Lessons
The course has six lessons complete with graded assignments and three supervised course examinations. The lessons are as follows:
- Lesson 1: The Materials o Music
- Lesson 2: Medieval Renaissance Music
- Lesson 3: First Midcourse Examination Information
- Lesson 4: Baroque Era Music
- Lesson 5: Classical Period Music
- Lesson 6: Second Midcourse Examination Information
- Lesson 7: Romantic Era Music
- Lesson 8: Twentieth Century Music
- Lesson 9: Final Examination Information
The First Midcourse Exam (Lesson 3) will cover questions from Lessons 1 and 2. The Second Midcourse Exam (Lesson 6) will include questions from Lessons 4 and 5. The Final Exam (Lesson 9) will have questions from Lessons 7 and 8. You will be allowed two hours to take each exam.
The examinations will be divided into two parts (unless otherwise stated):
- Factual historical information
- Listening examples
The factual historical information will be taken from the learning quizzes, textbook, and the lesson Discussion sections. Examinations are multiple-choice.
Types of Writing Assignments
Each lesson will include one or two self-study quizzes. They may be completed “open-book” with textbook, notes, and listening examples to assist you. Please circle the correct answer of each multiple-choice question on the answer sheet provided.
Listening lessons (experiences) are completed by listening to the CDs or MP3s and following along with the textbook listening maps. Some of the listening lessons will require a written response. They will be used in conjunction with the CDs or MP3s. Answers should be entered into the Music Listening Response Form.
Grading Criteria
The course components will be weighted as follows:
- First Midcourse Exam (Middle Ages, Renaissance) — 20%
- Second Midcourse Exam (Baroque and Classical) — 20%
- Final Exam (Romantic and 20th Century) — 20%
- Lesson Quizzes — 25%
- Written Listening Responses — 15%
