Biographical Note
Elizabeth Peters was born in Salem township in Meigs County, Ohio on August 21, 1870 to Jacob Peters and Susannah Paul Peters. She married John Clarence McGrath in Gallipolis, Ohio on August 21 1893. She resided in Meigs County from 1870 to 1887 and was in St. Paul, Nebraska from 1887 to 1896. In Nebraska she was a teacher from 1893 to 1895 and worked as a bookkeeper at her Uncle Nick Paul's bank in St. Paul. In 1896 she was back in ohio, living in Ewington in Gallia County from 1896 to 1898. She was then living in Jobs in Hocking County, Ohio from 1898 to 1901. After that she lived in Nelsonville from 1901 to 1915 and during this time she worked as a bookkeeper for hte Sunday Creek Coal Company. In 1915 she moved to Athens, Ohio and worked as a clerk at the Athens County Commissioners Office until 1922. In 1922 she became the first woman elected to an office in Athens County and became the Athens County Recorder where she served for two terms from 1922 to 1926. She then moved to Columbus with her family and worked as a "House Mother" at the Franklin County Childrens Home from 1927 to 1929.
She had two children, Margaret McGrath who was born in St. Paul, Nebraska on 1896 April 28 and Grace Elizabeth McGrath who was born in Jobs, Ohio on 1899 November 19.
