Biographical Note
Charles Henry Harris was born in Athens, Ohio on November 16, 1884 to Charles Wesley and Estella Howe Harris.
Charles Wesley Harris lived in Athens County, Ohio and died on February 8, 1902. The Harris family are direct descendents of John Harris, founder of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Silas Bingham II is Charles Wesley Harris's maternal grandfather, was from Connecticut, and was the first sheriff of Athens County, Ohio. His father Silas Bingham I was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Members of the Bingham family can trace their heritage back to Captian Myles Standish from the Mayflower and Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island.
Charles Henry Harris attended and graduated from Athens High School in 1902 and Ohio University in 1906. During his school days he worked odd jobs and carried newspapers. In 1905 he became a reporter for the "Athens Messenger" daily paper. He later became editor. He was a faculty member at the Ohio School of Journalism and was clerk of the city council in Athens for at least 20 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, B.P.O.E., the Rotary Club, Community Chest, Boy Scouts of America, the Methodist Church, and was a Republican. He enjoyed automobiles, fishing, and hunting.
He married Lulu Fulton on May 28, 1907. Her parents were James B. and Esther Wilson Fulton. They had one child together, Esther Wilson Harris.
