Biography

William Franklin Townsend, author of reminiscences of the American Civil War, was born in Meigs County Ohio on March 10, 1847. His father was William Riggs Townsend (1824-1902) and his mother was Cynthia Stevens. William R. Townsend was a cabinet maker, lived in Pagetown, Ohio, and served as a Major, Company C, 140 regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. William F. Townsend served as a private in Company C, 30 regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. William F. married Mary Jane Sinclair (1845-1927) and together they had three children, Myrta Rosaltha (1867-1908) who married Oscar Graves, Margaret Weston (1881-1919), and George Alfred Gath (1887-1956). William F. worked as a carpenter until 1897 when he became postmaster at Downington, Ohio. He died in April of 1928 and was buried with his wife in Wells cemetery. - the above was extracted from typed geneaological notes in the possession (1963) of Lawrence Graves of Athens, Ohio, grandson of Oscar and Myrta Rosaltha (Townsend) Graves.

Abstract

The collection is a scrapbook entitled William F. Townsend's War Diary. It contains newspaper clippings from Pomeroy, Ohio's The Leader. The clippings contain of his reminisces about the Civil War.
