Biography
Lloyd E. Moore (1931-2010) was born in Columbus, Ohio on February 10, 1931. He graduated from South High School in Columbus in 1949. From 1950-1954, Moore served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War from 1952-1953. He was honorably discharged from the Marines with the rank of staff sergeant. After returning from military service, Moore attended Ohio State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and Juris Doctor (summa cum laude) in 1958. In 1959, Moore was admitted to the practice of law in Ohio. He practiced law in Lawrence County, Ohio for 36 years, including four years as county prosecutor. In 1973, he published the book, “The Jury, Tool of Kings, Palladium of Liberty” (W.H. Anderson Publishing Company). After his retirement in 1995, Moore and Marilyn, his wife, relocated to Athens, Ohio.
As both lawyer and photographer, Moore used photography to help his clients by taking photographs to use as exhibits in court cases. He also photographed numerous individuals he met throughout southeast Ohio, particularly those living in Lawrence County, as part of four different photography series: "People," "Portraits," "Living Rooms," and "Obituaries." A selection of those photographs was published in the book " Face to Face: The Photography of Lloyd E. Moore
" (Ohio University Press, 2003). Moore's photography also extended to documenting his various travels in the United States, Asia, Great Britain, and Europe, often taking photographs of himself with various individuals he met along the way which he called "Ego Slides," and explorations with abstract photography.
Moore exhibited his work nationally and internationally. He received the Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Award in 1977, an honorable mention at the Huntington Museum of Art "Works on Walls" in 1984, and the Royal Photographic Society of Bath, England made him a Fellow in 1986 and awarded him a Gold Medal for Best Colour Print in 1988. In addition to the book, " Face to Face: The Photography of Lloyd E. Moore
," Moore's photographs were published in the magazine "Rivers Cities" (1979), "Ohio People" in "The Photographic Journal" (1991), "DeLorean World," and "Selections from the Polaroid Collection" compact disc (1997) for the 50th anniversary of instant photography. Moore served as a guest lecturer for Ohio University, University of Dayton, the Chillicothe Country Club, the Art Gallery of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College, the Parkersburg, West Virginia Camera Club, the Morgan County, Ohio Camera Club, and numerous other places throughout the Midwest United States. Moore is also author of the book "The Jury, Tool of Kings, Palladium of Liberty" (W.H. Anderson Publishing Company, 1973).
Lloyd E. Moore died on December 17, 2010.
