Biographical note
John Ballard was born on October 1st, 1790 in Charlemont, Massachusetts. He spent time in Lancaster, Massachusetts and learned the trade of carriage trimmer and harness maker. He moved to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1811. He left for Ohio in October of 1838 and moved to Athens in February of 1839.
In Athens he was successful in the mercantile business, heading the firm J. Ballard & Sons. He also spent years as the president of the Athens branch of the State Bank.
His sons included: Otis Ballard (banker in Circleville, Ohio), Charles Ballard who manufactured farm equipment in Springfield, Ohio), James Ballard who was a merchant in Athens, and Rev. Addison Ballard.
