53 letters, 1971 - 1972
Scope and Content
The John Owens (JO) papers span from 1900 to 1972 and document JO's life as a labor leader. The collection includes correspondence, court documents, speeches by JO, nearly 200 photographs, and bound volumes of records relating to the United Mine Workers. The correspondence is arranged by year, then alphabetically and includes many letters from prominent labor leaders such as: John L. Lewis, Thomas Kennedy, W.A. Boyle, Earl Houck, and Adolph Pacifico. Some of the more interesting items in this collection are included in the large number of civil actions involving the UMWA, in particular, the testimonies of the suspects in the murder of labor leader Joseph Yablonski and family.
