This collection includes of letters and correspondence, documents, journals, and diaries, manuscripts, printed matter, photographs, Vinton County deEds, tax records, wills, and administrators' letters of the Cox and Martindill families. The collection also includes some records of the Cox Brothers Oil and Gas Company.

Biography of the Cox and Martindill family
James A. Martindill born around 1825 in Creola, Gallia County, Ohio. His parents were Moses Martindale and Matilda Claypool. He married Sarah Shrek on March 16, 1848, in Vinton County, Ohio. He was a justice of the peace and had his teaching certificate from Vinton County, Ohio. He died December 3, 1915 in Vinton County, Ohio.
Eliza Martindill Cox was the daughter of James A. Martindill. She was born January 22, 1864 in Vinton County, Ohio. She married Lewis Seneca Cox on June 10, 1884 in Vinton County, Ohio. She died around 1945.
Lewis Seneca Cox was born around 1857. He was a farmer and school teacher. He taught from 1878 to 1912 in Vinton County, Ohio. He died after 1920.
Nora Ethel Cox was the daughter of Lewis S. and Eliza Cox. She was a school teacher from 1910 to at least 1911.
Cox Brothers Oil and Gas Company was founded in 1916. It leased 270 acres in Richland Township, Vinton County, Ohio and 2413 acres in Madison Township, Scioto County, Ohio. There was a contract between the company and The Ohio Fuel and Supply Company for the entire production through winter and one-third of the production through the summer. It was still in operation in 1917.

The Ohio University Archives received the collection in 1969 as a gift from Max D. Cox.
