Waldron Harry Wakefield Papers
Scope and Content
The Waldron Harry Wakefield (WHW) papers span from 1912 to 1966 and document WHW's business pursuits, local political career and personal life in Athens, Ohio. The collection is divided into four series: business, political, family, and miscellaneous. In the business series, there are various awards and letters related to the Wakefield Garage. In the political series, there are campaign postcards from WHW's first political campaign in 1944, and artifacts from his days as Athens County Commissioner including Athens County envelopes and receipts for County Commissioner's of Ohio dues. In the family series, there are several newspapers that his children had written in when they were young and printed programs from the Athens City Schools. The miscellaneous section includes a program from the horse races at the 1949 Athens County Fair with the standings penciled in.

Biography of Waldron Harry Wakefield
Athens native and businessman Waldron Harry Wakefield, known as W.H. or Wink, was born July 8, 1899 to George and Gertrude (Clenderin) Wakefield in Alexander Township, Athens, Ohio. He spent all his life in Athens County. He owned and operated a garage called Wakefield Motors on Richland Avenue for 47 years. The garage later moved to Route 50. He was an Athens County Commissioner from 1944-1964. He also served on the Athens County Board of Education, was a member of the Athens County Republican Executive and Central Committees, vice president of the Margaret Creek Conservative District and was a member of the Alexander Presbyterian Church. He was married to Margaret McGucken and had three children, Betty (Wood), Robert and James. He had one brother, Harley, also of Athens. he died April 21, 1970 at the age of 70.
