History of Helaine Victoria Press
The Helaine Victoria Press was dedicated to its mission of spreading information about women's history, promoting education about feminist topics, and bringing attention to historically significant, influential, or traditionally neglected/forgotten female figures. In addition, the Press sought to make history easily accessible to the public in order to efficiently spread awareness and knowledge.
Jocelyn Helaine Cohen and Nancy Victoria Taylor Poore founded the Helaine Victoria Press in Santa Monica, California in 1973. Through creating this company, Ms. Cohen and Ms. Poore aimed to highlight specific figures and areas of women's history that had often been overlooked or misremembered in traditional history. These women viewed postcards as perfect vessels for education because postcards are small, quick to read, inexpensive, and visually appealing, they act as a snapshot of a piece of history, and they easily reach a wide, diverse audience. After Ms. Poore left the Press, Ms. Cohen continued to work the press and publish newsletters for the Craftwimmin's Mutual Aid Society.
The Press was a nonprofit educational organization that, though mostly run by volunteers, produced postcards for over 17 years. By 1991, which was the last year that the Helaine Victoria Press produced postcards, their company had created perhaps the world's most extensive and comprehensive collection of postcards dedicated to the lives of women.
