John Cornwell's Journal "To and From California"
Scope and Content
John Cornwell's Journal "To and From California" spans from March 16, 1852 through August 19, 1856, and contains Cornwell's narrative of his trip to California during the gold rush. The journal is a leather-bound book approximately 250 pages long. Besides the narrative, it also contains several expenditure lists, a series of missives relating to temperance issues, a drawing of Cape Horn by Samuel Webber, and a tipped in certificate naming Cornwell a member of the "Sons of Temperance."

Biography of John Cornwell
According to Foster Cornwell (great grandson of John), John Cornwell was born May 17, 1812 in the village of Hollwell (now Picton), Prince Edward County, Canada. He died in Athens, Ohio, in 1883. He was the son of David Cornwell (born August 11, 1778 in Massachusetts and died near Gallipolis, Ohio on October 13th, 1819) and Phoebe Gilbert Goldsmith (born October 3, 1786 in Piscataway, Union county, New Jersey and died November 8, 1842).
