Marting Iron & Steel Company records

In 1899 Marting Iron and Steel Co. was organized by Colonel H.A. Marting who became the president and general manager of the Company. Marting Iron and Steel Co. (one of the most notable successes of the iron trade) took over Big Etna Furnace in January 1899, which was previously in the Etna Iron Works Property. Marting Iron and Steel Co. was making 240 tons of fine Bessemer iron daily in 1899, employed up to three hundred men when at full capacity, and increased in capacity over the next ten years due to the efficient work of three iron furnaces: Etna Furnace, Ironton Furnace (which was incorporated in May 1907, completed in spring of 1908, and commenced operations in November of 1908), and Lawrence Furnace (incorporated in February 1910).

The furnaces were operated separately by their respective previous corporations until July 1912, when the Lawrence and ironton iron companies went out of existence and were consolidated with the Marting Iron and Steel Company, which had already been operating the Etna furnace as the Marting I&S Co.This successful performance lasted all ten years until the death of Colonel H.A. Marting on September 27th, 1919. After his death the performance of the company became less and less efficient, as can be seen in the company assessment in 1920, when business was almost halted due to the significant drop in pig iron prices, and an increase in coke prices. After continued inefficient work throughout the next twenty years, the company was dissolved in 1938.
