Robert W. Young papers.
Scope and Content
The Robert W. Young (RWY) collection is comprised of materials collected by RWY while he was a student at Ohio University (OU) from 1926 to 1930. The collection includes theatre programs, a dance card, a commencement program, a blank notebook, student informational booklets and a sheet of OU Symphony Orchestra letterhead. The collection was forwarded to Ohio University Alumni Affairs by Evelyn C. Young after his death, and subsequently forwarded to the University Archives.
There is a program from "Three One-Act Plays" from a performance on March 14, 1928 presented by the Modern Language Department. The program lists the players in each play as well as the stage manager and a brief description of the plot. Robert Young is listed as playing Alfred in the first play entitled "Eigensinn". The other two plays are "Mi Novio Espanol" and "L'Anglais el qu'on le parle". There is also an insert in the program for a fourth play "Helen's Husband" which appears on the same paper, printing, etc. and appears to be part of the same program.
McGuffey's Eclectic Readers Revue was presented June 9, 1928 and is listed as a pageant in 5 episodes. The text for the revue was written by Miss Irma Voigt and Miss Edith A. Wray. This was written as a tribute to William Holmes McGuffey, President of Ohio University from 1839-1843 and author of the Eclectic Series of school readers. Mr. Robert Young is listed in this program as a member of the orchestra playing first violin. The program lists members of the cast, as well as those serving other functions to produce the pageant. There is a brief biographical note for William McGuffey, a prologue, an explanation of each episode, and an epilogue.
The black leather notebook is in very good condition. It is embossed on the front with "Ohio University" and the year 1930. The "O" in Ohio is painted gold. Also embossed on the front is the Ohio University Seal. This appears to be a small book for taking notes, however the pages are all blank with no handwriting at all.
There is a commencement program from June 9, 1930. This outlines the program and also lists the Degrees and Diplomas Granted. Robert Young is listed under Bachelor of Science in Physics, "Graduated with highest honor".
Also included are two small books 4 ½" x 2 ¼" from 1926-27 and 1927-28. They are entitled "O" Book of Ohio University. These booklets contain a lot of useful information for Ohio University students such as train schedules, organizations, clubs, sports, school songs and cheers, fraternities, sororities, registration, etc.
A dance card from Junior Prom April 5, 1929 is a small 2" x 3" booklet with light green plastic cover with a white "O" on the front with "'30" on the "O". Pages inside list committee members, name of the band "Henry Theis and His Sinton Band", class officers, Receiving, and guests.
