History of Athens County Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation
The Athens County Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (ACCURC - pronounced "A Kirk") was organized in the 1980s by citizens from the Athens community concerned about the preservation of the buildings at the Athens Mental Health Center. It was ACCURC which, in its efforts to find new uses for these structures, sponsored a contest that gave the center the name by which the hilltop complex is now popularly known as, "The Ridges." The organization focused on other projects as well, particularly the efforts to reconstruct the Stuart Opera House in Nelsonville, following a major fire there in 1979 and to develop a Hocking Valley Museum of Theatrical History.
