Loah Frost Dow scrapbook
Scope and Content
The Loah Frost Dow (LFD) scrapbook contains photographs collected by LFD during her time as a student at Ohio University (OU) in the early 1910s. It includes loose scrapbook pages with sepia-toned photographs and labels. The photographs depict student life on campus and trips to the Great Plains. Many are from the group of women living LFD's females only dormitory. The Great Plains pictures, from Oklahoma and North Dakota are somewhat anomalous on first glance, but it should be assumed that there is some connection not immediately apparent. The scrapbook was donated to Betty Hollow during her work on the Bicentennial book, and after it was then transferred to the OU archives, no contact information remained for the donor. It should be noted that the pictures come mostly from 1914 to 1915, and given the attitudes of the day, there is a photograph of the LFD and friends wearing blackface, with a racial epithet describing them. There is no binding or covers for the scrapbook--as stated, they are loose-- and so the edges have become somewhat worn. All the same, however, the pages are in good condition, and the photographs are holding up fairly well. There are some signs of silvering, though the effects of this are heightened on some pictures by preexisting problems in the photograph, viz. brightness. No additional care need be taken with these pages, as the adhesive is remaining strong and the pictures are in good condition.
