The Bingham House Collection
Scope and Content
The Bingham House Collection consists of three binders, which one was taken apart and put into folders. The names of the three binders are: The Bingham House - The Visitors Center: Then and Now, The Visitors Center: The Visitors Center: The Bingham Family History, and Visitor Center Furnishing & Accessories. The first binder, The Bingham House - The Visitors Center: Then and Now, was taken apart and put into folders for easier storage. The contents within the Folders include information of the beginning of the house. This includes: Silas Bingham, house history, and movements of the house. It also has information of the House's start as the Visitors Center including: the July 4, 1987 dedication, Exhibits, 10th Anniversary Celebration, General Information and Visitors Summaries. Also in the binder there's information on the Northwest Territories, the Athens Mental Hospital, and History about Ohio University. The second binder, The Visitors Center: The Bingham Family History, has information about the genealogy of Silas Bingham. The genealogy consists of information of his family traced back to England, his relatives moving around the country and his family to carry on after him. The third binder, Visitor Center Furnishing & Accessories, has all the information about the furniture within in The Bingham House. Each piece of furniture or item in the house has a page of documentation listing information about the specific item. The documentation asks information including the object, origin, period, date, marks/materials, size, cost, current value, description, comments, and information of the seller or donator. The information is filled out to the best ability possible.

History of The Bingham House
The Bingham House was built 1805 or a few years prior by Silas Bingham in Athens, Ohio. It was originally located on South College Street, where the Chi Omega and Pi Beta Phi now stand. The House was later then moved to East State Street around the year 1844. Finally, in 1987, the house was refurbished and moved to the corner of Shaffer Street and Richland Avenue, where it serves as a Visitors Center for Ohio University and the city of Athens.
