Pearl / Docket Exchange Log
Scope and Content
The Pearl / Docket Exchange Log is the log maintained by the Pearl switchboard from April 21 to November 25, 1945. It provides a continuing record of who was on duty, records phone service interruptions and brief notes on air raids, plane crashes, storms and other disrupting events. Included with the log is a narrative account of the switchboard's history with the 81st Air Service Group in Iwo Jima. The narrative's author is unknown. The collection originally was cataloged under Robert Daniel's name, but the reasons for this are also unknown.

History of 81st Air Service Group, 7th Fighter Command, 20th Air Force
During World War II, the 81st Air Service Group worked with the 506th Fighter Group. They jointly occupied North Field on Iwo Jima. The 81st consisted of three companies: Headquarters, Engineering, and Supply. While the 506th flew missions against Japan, the 81st provided services to keep the air planes operational. The 81st was stationed at Iwo Jima from April 16 to December 10, 1945. It maintained its own switchboard housed in a field tent. One of the operators was Lieutenant Robert Daniel.
