Ohio University Cultural Events collection
Scope and Content
The Ohio University Cultural Events collection documents theatre, dance and musical performances held at Ohio University from 1942 to 1975. Numerous groups, notably the Community Concert Association, the Convocations Committee and the University Chamber Music Society worked to bring top dance companies, theater groups, and musicians to the area and then offered these performances to students, faculty, and members of the community for reasonable prices. Most student tickets were available for $.50, while general admission was available for $2.00. A number of the events were even offered free of charge for students. A wide variety of events came to the university, including the national players in Oedipus Rex and Taming of the Shrew, performances of Porgy and Bess, The Fantastiks, Phaedra, and Lamp at Midnight, the story of Galileo. Dance groups included Les Danseurs Americains, Jean-Leon Destine and his Afro-Haitian Dance Company, the Dance Theater of Harlem, and the American Ballet Theater. Musical groups from around the world also came to Ohio University, including the Netherlands String Quartet, The New York String Sixtet, the Quartet di Roma, Puerto Rican pianist Sanroma, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
The collection is divided into seven seperate folders. Event programs are arranged into four folders, according to the performance's sponsor. These programs outline the performance and provide detailed information about the performers and the event, as well as upcoming shows. Also included in the collection are event advertisements and mailings, public relations announcements made to students, faculty, and the community, and newspaper articles previewing several of the events. These folders have all been placed in one Hollinger box. The materials are in fairly good condition.
