Scope and Content
The Manuel Rances diplomatic papers span from 1880 to 1890 and contain correspondence and newspaper clippings sent and received by him while he was a Spanish ambassador in London. The correspondence discusses England's problems in Afghanistan, South Africa and Egypt at the end of the 1800s. Situations discussed involving Spain include Cuba, Morocco, Gibraltar and Chile. Also included are correspondence from Alfonso XII, King of Spain; other Spanish governmental figures; and English governmental figures.

Biography of Manuel Rances
Manuel Rances was born in Cadiz, Spain, in 1824 and died in Ciudad Real, Spain, in 1897. He held the title Marques de Casa Lainglesia and was a Spanish ambassador in London beginning in 1880. In his diplomatic capacity, he primarily reported to and conferred with Antonio Aguilar, Marques de la Vega de Armijo; Carlos O'Donnell Abreu, Duque de Tetuan; and Juan Francisco Camacho.
