Biography of Josiah Coe
The Coe family is one of the oldest in the United States, its first American members having come here from Suffolkshire, England.
Josiah Coe was born in Stratford, Connecticut, in 1769. He purchased 500 acres of land in the Northwest Territory in 1803. Three years later he and his family moved to Athens. During his years in Athens, Coe served on the first grand jury assembled in the county. He was also one of the contributors to fund the building of Athens' first log-cabin courthouse. Coe also helped found the Athens Presbyterian Church, established in 1809.
Coe was the father of fifteen children, and died April 28, 1846.
