Martzolff family papers
Scope and Content
The Martzolff family papers span from 1879 to 1944 and contain the collected personal papers of Clement Luther Martzolff and his wife Candus Mage Martzolff. Included in the record series are several photocopied documents, originally collected in one folder with an attached note stating that they are the gift of Stephen Botley. The records series is a pretty much random collection of documents. Because of this heterogeneity, the records have been processed in pretty much the same order in which they were found. Some documents have been given their own folder that were originally filed with others.
Box One contains 22 folders. The materials include writings by C. L. Martzolff, writings about C. L. Martzolff, and writings by others owned by C. L. Martzolff.
Folder One contains a short biographical sketch of C. L. Martzolff and an inventory of the documents contained in the original box. (undated)
Folder Two contains pages from a ring notebook. As the metal rings had rusted, and the leather covers were degraded, the pages were removed and the covered discarded. The contents of the notebook consist of notes for "Institutional Interpretation of History". (undated)
Folder Three contains tear sheets from "The American Schoolmaster" of an article by C. L. Martzolff entitled, "The Deeper Meanings of the World War". (undated)
Folder Four contains a booklet, written by Martzolff, entitled "Synopsis of Ohio History with More Than 1500 Topical References" (1980).
Folder Five contains a booklet by Martzolff entitled "A Brief History of Athens County Ohio" (1916).
Folder Six contains a Martzolff authored booklet entitled "Ohio History Search Topics" (1921).
Folder Seven contains a publisher's promotional flyer for C. L. Martzolff's magnum opus, "History of Perry County" (circa 1902).
Folder Eight contains a booklet entitled "The Autobiography of Thomas Ewing" which was edited by Martzolff (1912).
Folder Nine contains promotional flyers for, and press notices of, public lectures given by C. L. Martzolff (circa 1904-1909).
Folder Ten contains a booklet by D.H. Willard, entitled "Sketch of the Life of Maj. Simon Willard (1879).
Folder Eleven contains two sets of exam questions. One is an undated "True or False" test on European history. The other is labeled "Higher Branch Examination, New Lexington, Ohio - Saturday, December 3, 1898".
Folder Twelve contains an article on the death of C. L. Martzolff from "The Ohio Teacher" (September 1922).
Folder Thirteen contains a small, handwritten notebook containing questions on such topics as Physiology, German Grammar, "General Information" and History; possibly a Martzolff study, or teaching, aid (undated).
Folder Fourteen contains an Ohio University Bulletin containing the article "Ohio University, the Historic College of the Old Northwest" by Clement L. Martzolff, Alumni Secretary (October 1910).
Folder Fifteen contains two copies of a photographic portrait of C. L. Martzolff (undated).
Folder Sixteen contains a 6" x 9" ring binder containing hand-written genealogical notes, news clippings, and correspondence relevant to the Martzolff family (undated).
Folder Seventeen contain yearbooks of the Nondescript Club, New Lexington, Ohio for years between 1933 and 1956. Mrs. Clement was a member of that club.
Folder Eighteen contains two pieces of personal correspondence dated 1924 and 1944, evidently belonging to Mrs. Martzolff.
Folder Nineteen contains five printed copies of a Christmas story, written by C. L. Martzolff, entitled "The First Service Star" (undated).
Folder Twenty contains an Inauguration Invitation and program for the Woodrow Wilson-Thomas R. Marshall inaugural, sent from the U.S. Senate to C. L. Martzolff as a Presidential Elector from the state of Ohio (March 1913).
Folder Twenty-one contains a set of filled-out questionnaires, designed by Martzolff to gather statistics on "the relation and influence of the college course on the selection of a vocation." (March 1914).
Folder Twenty-two contains several undated, typewritten manuscripts (in Ohio University mailing envelope) of writings by C. L. Martzolff, including stories and histories intended for children.
Box Two contains nine folders. The first folder, dated February 18, 1920, contains two copies of the program for the First Ohio University Founders Day.
Folder Two contains a hand-written class roster for "Shawnee Center - Elementary Course of Study - Prof. Thompson 1913" - verified by C. L. Martzolff (as superintendant?). On the page is also noted receipt of a fee "for the above Center".
