History of The Athens Marathon
The Athens Marathon began in 1968 and has continued through the years. The laurel wreath given to winners is sent in from Athens, Greece, by Stavraki connects the ancient city of Athens to the Ohio city with the same name. The laurel crown wreath made from olive leaves received by the winner is in honor of the age old tradition of the Olympics which began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece with a modern invention taking place in Athens, Greece in 1896.
