Walter S. Tevis papers
Scope and Content
The Walter S. Tevis papers span from the 1950s to the 1970s and document the career of this author and Ohio University faculty member. Box One now holds nineteen folders containing manuscripts (written by Tevis, colleagues, or students), correspondence, and other miscellaneous personal documents and items, most of which pertain to Tevis' career as a writer. Box Two now holds nine folders containing materials related to Tevis' work as a member of the Ohio University (OU) Department of English. These materials include OU Personal Data Sheets; general OU Department of English materials (staff rosters, curriculum planning documents, etc.); OU Creative Writing Program materials (brochure, syllabi, related correspondence, etc.); teaching materials (hand-outs, course descriptions, syllabi, examinations, etc.); Course Evaluation forms; and four folders of student poetry. Among the items missing from the original collection are 89 volumes of books; several photographs; faculty grade reports and grade books. There was also found in one of the folders a document headed, "Walter Tevis Collection, Supplement." This document mentions, "A single folder containing the following: Walter Tevis obit, audio cassette recording; 2 parts; 8/15-16/1984, William Heyen. 10/1-2-3/1984, WCBS/CBS radio." Neither this folder, nor the contents described above were found with the collection in January 2011. It is also noted that the Tevis book entitled Far From Home is described as a "novel" in the original notes; it is actually a short-story collection. It is not known how accurate the item counts in the original notes were. Some of these counts will have changed due to the resorting done in January, 2011. Collection reorganized and indexed by Rob Dakin in January, 2011. It has also been relocated from the Manuscript Collection to the University Archives. The original synopsis and description is retained, following Box Two, Folder Nine.
