History of Etna Iron Works Co,.
In 1820 Joseph and Kitty Dollarhide Kelly moved their family to the Lawrence County area where Etna Furnace was later built. In 1832 Joseph Kelly sold their land to James Rodgers and others and built Etna Furnace. WWhen the mammoth furnace of the Etna Iron Works was erected in 1872, only one of the twin stacks was completed. The Etna Iron Works Co. owned 16,000 acres of land around Etna and Vesuvius furnaces (to be: Lawrence County). The Etna company mined about 30,00 tons a year, and was eventually bought by and incorporated into the Marting Iron and Steel Co. in January of 1899.
