Troy Wilson Organ manuscripts on Western Approaches to Eastern Philosophy
Scope and Content
Troy Wilson Organ manuscripts on Western Approaches to Eastern Philosophy consist of two typewritten manuscripts, with revisions, and two galley proofs, of the book Western Approaches to Eastern Philosophy. There are no notes on the documents, per se, so it is not known precisely when they were created, who made the revisions, or in what order the galleys were created.
The first typescript was originally in three folders. The first contained an Index, with revisions. The second contained the book's title page, contents page, and hand-written notes for a copyright and publications notes page, etc. The third folder contained the entire typescript. The typescript has now been divided into three acid-free folders, while the first two folders have been left as they were. Notations have been redone to conform to current practice.
The second of the typescripts was originally in a commercial typing paper carton, the corners of which were all broken. The carton was hand-labeled "Western Approaches to Easter Philosophy, Second Copy". The title page of this copy includes the typewritten notation:
THIS IS NOT A CLEAN COPY. I HAVE MARKED PROPER NAMES I PLAN TO INSERT IN THE INDEX. ALSO THE FOOTNOTES ARE VERY MESSY. THIS COPY IS NOT TO BE USED BY THE PRINTER.
This copy is now divided among four acid-free folders (Eight through Eleven). It contains many revisions, including quite a bit of cut-and-paste work, especially on the portion in Folder Ten (pp. 213-298).
It is not certain which of the "galleys" was created first. Since the legal-size galley seems to be the most complete, it is possible that it is the more "final" of the two. It bears a copyright date of 1975, which is the only date found on any of the documents. Both galleys show evidence of proofing and revision.
