Scope and Content
The Department of Modern Languages records span from 1967 to 2004 and document the activities of this academic unit at Ohio University. The collection is organized into four series: 1. Administration; 2. Modern Language Curriculum Committee; 3. Publications; and 4. Study Abroad. The materials in the collection are in fairly good condition. However, many of the pictures are in older photo albums. In the future, further work should be done to preserve these, and remove them from their plastic binding.

Since the 1960s, Ohio University has had a strong commitment to teaching foreign languages and aiding its students study abroad. The Department of Modern Languages records illustrate the wide variety of study abroad programs, the dedication of the program directors, and the university's efforts to continue to make the Modern Language department strong and respected.
Beginning in the 1960s, Ohio University has offered study abroad programs in France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Mexico, and Italy. Opportunities later expanded to Russia, japan, England, and Greece. In addition, the Modern Language department has masters programs in French and Spanish and allows students to become a part of a number of honorary fraternities.
