Scope and Content
The Center of Excellence for Multicultural Medicine (COEMM) records span from 1984 to 2006 and document the history of the COEMM at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM). The record series contains documents related to the establishment and administration of such programs as: the Post-Baccalaureate Program; the Facilitating Entry and Retention Program; Program ExCEL; the Summer Scholars Program; the Summer Enrichment Program; the Summer Institute Program; the Prematriculation Program; and the Summer Scholars Physical Therapy Program, among others.
Boxes 1 - 3 (1987-2006) contain initial and continuing grant applications for the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) program, the Post-Baccalaureate Program, Facilitating Entry and Retention Program, the Center of Excellence Program (COEP), Program ExCEL, etc.
Box 4 (1997-2000) contains HCOP and COEP award letters, related correspondence, budget award from the Ohio University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), and related materials.
Box 5 (1994-2005) contains COEP and HCOP Progress Reports (bound and unbound, and on disk); HCOP Uniform Progress reports for HRSA, and related materials.
Box 6 (1993-2002) contains, in addition to several, mostly unbound, HCOP and COEP Annual Reports and Progress Reports, reports on Program ExCEL, the Post-Baccalaureate Program, the Summer Scholars Program; copies of the HCOP Digest; a disk containing a COEP presentation; an HCOP Directory; miscellaneous correspondence, schedules, agendas, and reports concerning program activities.
Box 7 (1996-2004) contains sets of the contents of the program binders issued to student participants in the Summer Scholars Program (pre-Medicine and pre-Physical Therapy); the Summer Enrichment Program; the Summer Institute Program; as well as additional planning documents and program evaluations. The binders include student, faculty and staff rosters, syllabi, and other information.
Box 8 (1984-2004) contains participant composite photographs, rosters, program schedules, program evaluations, other binder contents, etc. for the COEP Pre-Matriculation Program; a summer program for minority students entering OU-COM in the fall.
Box 9 (1991-2003) contains HRSA application materials, planning documents, grant proposals, a HRSA Directory of Post-Baccalaureate Programs, and other documents related to the COEMM Post-Baccalaureate Program.
Box 10 (1994-2004) contains miscellaneous studies and reports related to minority health and education and to the operation of the COEMM. Included are such items as: COEP Curriculum Development Report; Case Studies relating to minority health issues; agendas and minutes of the COEP Advisory Council; correspondence and reports related to the HCOP and COEP site visits; the Ohio University Institute for Communication Improvement report on Minority Student Experiences; the COEP Report to the Advisory Board; HRSA Site Visit Report; various records, reports, tools, and papers on minority issues.
Box 11 (1996-2005) contains agendas, minutes, and other documents related to the regularly scheduled joint HCOP/COEP staff meetings.
Box 12 (1994-2005) contains documents related to Health Policy development; Diversity; OU-COM Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) curriculum development; Entry and Retention issues. This includes materials from the OU-COM Health Policy Planning Unit; the CORE Academic Steering Committee; the OU-COM Directors' Meetings.
Box 13 (1994-2002) contains documents pertaining to the COEP-funded Minority Student Summer Research Fellowships, including research proposals, award letters and student research papers.
Box 14 (1992-2000) contains grant proposals, correspondence, planning materials, etc. related to several grant-funded programs, including: the Career Program; NEON; Upward Bound; S.H.A.R.E. Kenya; Program ExCEL. Also included are reports on various minority issues and documents related to the history of the COEP.
Box 15 (1994-2005) contains materials related to COEP special programs such as: presentations; retreats; Minority Health Month; OU-COM Black Alumni Reunion; Student/Faculty Multicultural Focus Group; Minority Graduate Visitation Weekend; and various cultural competency-related publications.
Box 16 (1991-2005) contains historical documents related to the COEP Dedication Program (1994); minority recruitment efforts; PEPSI (Public Health, Epidemiology, Preventative Medicine, Social Medicine, Informatics) planning and development; and miscellaneous correspondence, publications, press clippings, organizational and program logos, publicity materials, brochures, organizational charts, etc.
Box 17 (1992-2002) contains background documents, legislative history, initial COEP award, budgets, grant documents and other historical materials.

History of The Center of Excellence for Multicultural Medicine
The Center of Excellence for Multicultural Medicine (COEMM) at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine supports disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students who have career goals in the healthcare field by providing programs designed to improve student access and success. COEMM consists of two grant-funded programs: the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) and the Center of Excellence (COE). With grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the HCOP and the COE administered a variety of programs for minority and disadvantaged students, with the aim of creating a pipeline to the health professions beginning at middle-school age and continuing through successful completion of formal training for one of the health care professions (medicine, physical therapy, etc.).
